Calgary man climbing new heights for local charity

A local businessman is climbing one of the highest peaks in the world to raise money for Calgary’s Handibus.

Thirty-six-year old Bill Borger plans to climb Mount Everest and has so far raised over $300,000 for the organization.

Borger tells 660News that he wanted a little adventure and to be able to help out a good cause makes it that much better.

“There’s kind of a linkage between people getting around Calgary and having their own ‘Everest’ to climb with the fact that I’m climbing Everest,” he says.

He already has swam the English Channel and cycled across Canada for other important causes.

Borger, who has a young family in Calgary, says the fact that he is a father of two made training so much more important.

“I’m trying to get the cardio up high, because at the altitude the cardio stays high because your body tries to get the oxygen,” he explains. “So my resting heart rate will be like 130, 140.”

And after the summit is done, he says he won’t be slowing down for long.

“Well……there will be something next, because I don’t want to get bored with life,” he laughs.

Borger plans to continue his fundraising efforts for the charity after returning to Canada.

He also will be sharing his adventure as he continues to the peak.
