Mountie charged with sex assault against boys

Calgary police have charged a former Mountie with sexually assaulting three boys.

Arnold James Somers, 69, is facing 14 charges for alleged incidents involving boys between the ages of 10 and 14 dating back to 2006.

The Herald reports Somers left the RCMP in 1994 after being charged with similar crimes in Saskatchewan and spent two years in prison.

These charges stem from an investigation launched last December after a 17-year-old made a complaint, claiming he was sexually abused between October 2007 and June 2009.

Through the investigation, two other victims were identified.  They were 10 and 14 at the time of the alleged assaults.

The 14 charges include sexual assault, sexual interference with a child under 14, invitation to sexual touching and indecent exposure to a person under 14.

Sgt. Ryan Jepsen tells 660News Somers has a history of similar convictions.

Jepsen says Somers gained access to the three victims by befriending their parents.

Police believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward and they encourage them to speak to CPS.

Somers remains in custody and will face a judge Wednesday.
