Nicolino Camardi will only spend six more months behind bars after pleading guilty to two animal cruelty charges.
The 19 year old was sentenced in Calgary, Friday. In total, the judge sentenced Camardi to 22 months, but credit for time served means he’ll spend only the next half year in jail.
In December, Camardi entered a guilty plea after a cat and dog were found dead in January, 2014.
A husky and a cat were found with their muzzles bound shut in a Willow Park alley.
The Calgary Humane Society confirmed the husky died from starvation and had been chronically malnourished, and the cat died of asphyxia, also suffering multiple traumatic injuries to the head, tail and limbs.
In a statement, Brad Nichols, Manager of Animal Cruelty Investigations said, “This is a horrific and violent crime that got the attention of the city (and beyond) in a way that animal cruelty has not before. This was the case that citizens put their foot down and said, we are not going to tolerate animal abuse.”
He added, “Today’s sentence reflects the serious nature of the offences.”
Camardi, also banned from owning any animals for the rest of his life, will be on probation for three years and must undergo psychological counselling.
