It may not even be December yet, but the Calgary Salvation Army is already desperate for toy donations.
Normally, volunteers are busy packing toy hampers this time of year, but most shifts are being cancelled because the shelves are bare.
Salvation Army Executive Director Karen Livick says the weather may be a factor, with people not thinking about Christmas yet due to the lack of snow, but there are other reasons as well.
“Some of our donors, who in prior years have been able to donate to the program, may have found themselves in some difficult times this year.”
However, there’s still lots of time to get things ready once donations start coming in
“We’ve already packed 1,500 hampers for kids,” adds Livick. “We have about 6,000 more to go and our Toy Angel program (in partnership with KiSS 95.9) kicked off this week.”
Livick remains optimistic things will pick up in the coming weeks.
