Calgary’s new city council now has to learn to work together

Calgary’s new city council will be sworn in Monday, but they’ll have to tackle some not-so-new issues.

Four fledglings will be joining ten returning councillors, and Mayor Naheen Nenshi, who won a third term.

Mount Royal University Political Scientist Lori Williams says the Green Line LRT project and the arena issue will have to be dealt with.

The budget will be top priority, however Williams says, first off, they will have to learn to work together.

“One of the things that we heard a lot during the campaign, and I think the vote reflected that. There are a lot of different things you can interpret from those votes, but I think we see across the board, or virtually across the board, is a signal that things have to be more collaborative.”

The public can starting arriving for the swearing-in ceremony in the Munipal Building Atrium at 1 p.m. Monday.

The event gets underway at 2 p.m, with TV screens available for overflow public viewing.

The ceremony will be streamed live on the city’s website http://www.calgary.ca/CA/city-clerks/Pages/Council-and-Committee-webcasts.aspx
