Get ready for another round of winter.
A snowfall warning is in effect for Calgary and the surrounding area.
Ten to 20 centimetres of snow will fall over the next 24 hours.
Meteorologist Andrew Schultz said it should start out relatively slow, but it could cause problems for the afternoon commute.
“It’s not like we’re going to see 10 or 15 centimetres in a few short hours, this system seems to be hanging around early this morning and with us until very late this evening until we see clearing through the overnight period,” he said.
There will be a bit of a break through the day Friday but the snow returns in the evening.
“The difference with this one is that it could have some showers mixed in at times so it’s not going to be exactly pure snow, it looks like we’re going to see a rain/snow mix and again this is dependent on area and time of day,” explained Schultz.
City of Calgary roads department spokesperson Chris McGeachy said crews were out applying anti-icing material overnight.
“The benefit of this time of year is the temperatures are closer to zero when it snows, the salt has a better effect on the road,” he said.
The focus Thursday will be on the priority one roads, with the seven day plan going into effect when the snow stops.
Drivers will still want to leave some extra time and space on the roads, especially if they’re travelling to the west and south of the city where there is an increased chance of freezing rain and heavier snowfall.
