Grey cup visit a dream come true for young Stamps fan

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Students at École Olds Elementary School got their chance to touch glory as the Grey Cup made its stop at the Olds school on Monday.

Wide-receiver for the Stampeders Austen Hartley and Stampeder legends Jay Mcneil and Stu Laird made the trip with the cup.

The event was a dream come true for one die-hard Stampeders fan thanks to Kids Cancer Care and the Calgary Stampeders.

Nine-year-old Carter Thompson, who battles stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, lives and breathes football and loves the Stampeders more. He was born with a hereditary heart condition, the same one that took his father about a year ago.

When he was a newborn, Carter had received a heart transplant and was healthy for many years, until last summer when he began experiencing stomach and back pain.

Following a trip to the hospital, Carter was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodkin lymphoma.

On Friday, Carter and his family were notified that Carter was classified in remission.

“I was talking to Carter over the weekend, asking him how do you think that will be, to see the Grey Cup and be a part of that special day?,” Carter’s mother, Tracy Thompson said, “He said, well mom I think winning the Grey Cup would feel like beating cancer so it’s going to be really neat to get to actually see it in person, because I’m beating cancer.”

Carter got his trophy on Monday, getting his chance to celebrate not only the Calgary Stampeders win, but his own as well.
