Calgary officer resigns prior to possible disciplinary action after arrest

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary police officer is resigning before facing possible disciplinary action after the violent arrest of a Black man.
Calgary Police Service (CPS) says constable Trevor Lindsay’s last day was Friday, Sept. 4.
Godfred Addai-Nyamekye says he was arrested without due cause in Dec. 2013, dropped in the middle of downtown, then left to call 911 for help when Linsday arrived.

Originally, Addai-Nyamekye was charged with assaulting Lindsay, but was acquitted when a judge saw police helicopter video showing him being beaten and dragged through the snow while handcuffed.
“There’s no other professional oversight legislation in Canada for police or other professionals that has such a loophole. And we’re calling on the government to close this loophole and upgrade the police act,” said
Ian Savage with the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association of Calgary.
An internal hearing was also pending for Lindsay’s aggravated assault conviction against a different man he was arresting in 2015.
CPS notes that police can still face criminal charges.
