Calgary Airport Authority welcomes back White Hat Volunteers

After a two-year pause, some familiar faces, and hats, will return to the Calgary International Airport to help you navigate your way around.

The Calgary Airport Authority’s White Hat Volunteers are making a comeback after the pandemic forced hundreds of the helpers to hang up their hats.

“I love the atmosphere of the airport. It really is a city within a city and the volunteers play a key role in helping the city run smoothly,” said Brian Wyatt, a White Hat Volunteer since 2014.

“Though the volunteer program has been on pause, we’ve been having regular calls to stay in touch with what’s happening at the airport. Everyone is so thrilled to get back at it.”

Since the White Hat Volunteer program began in 1991, YYC has seen the pool of volunteers grow from just 45 helpers to 500 in 2019.

At its peak, the group contributed 100,000 volunteer hours per year.

The Calgary Airport Authority says volunteers will slowly return over the course of the next few months, “followed by other volunteers including Pre-Board Pals and musicians as onboarding and training capacity permits.”
