Schweitzer plans to stay on as an MLA until the end of the month, though says the exact date could change.
He had already said he wasn’t going to run for re-election next year earlier in May.
Schweitzer had earlier mentioned he can leave the legislature confident, knowing that Alberta is on the financial rebound.
Schweitzer is a lawyer and a first-time legislature member for the UCP but has deep roots in politics.
He was a longtime conservative strategist in Manitoba, and in Alberta managed the 2014 leadership campaign of former premier Jim Prentice.
