Alberta government charges company for alleged Water Act violations

Aqua Properties Ltd. (Aqua) and Robert Rettie are both being charged by the Alberta government for violations of the Water Act.

The province states both Aqua and Rettie allegedly failed to provide the proper paperwork as well as false information being submitted to Alberta Environment and Parks for licences.

The company is facing seven charges for contravening term(s) or condition(s) of a licence, one charge of providing false or misleading information and one charge for failing to provide information, data, or records as required.

Rettie however is only facing one charge for providing false or misleading information.

The Alberta Water Act supports and promotes the conservation and management of water in Alberta, and “addresses Albertans’ rights to divert water, the types of instruments and decision-making processes available for diversion and use of water, and enforcement measures available to ensure the goals of the act are met,” according to the province.

Anyone caught violating the act could face a fine of $50,000 for an individual or up to $500,000 for a corporation.

Both the company and Rettie are expected to be in court on Sep. 19.
