Calgary shootings hit 7 year high in 2022
The Calgary Police Service says the city witnessed 126 shootings in 2022, the highest number of shootings since 2015.
During Wednesday’s police commission meeting, CPS Deputy Chief Paul Cook said the number of shootings in 2022 was 33 per cent higher than in 2021 and 45 percent above the five-year average.
He added that CPS seized 465 guns that were unlawfully used, possessed or stored by the end of November — a reduction from 2021, when 512 were seized.

Cook says that in 2023, Calgary has seen seven shootings, with the first one happening on New Year’s Day. At this time last year, it was 12.
He said in 2022, Calgary saw 27 homicides, 15 of which were a result of gun violence, which is the highest percentage of gun-related homicides in one year in Calgary.
Ten of the 27 homicides were determined to be organized crime.
” … homicides related to organized crime are historically hard to solve,” Cook said.
“As years go on, our clearance rates continue to increase with our homicides, because we don’t stop pursuing the truth in unsolved matters.”

Investigators were able to lay charges in 70 percent of 2022 homicides, which he says is near the average of 78 per cent.
