Calgary police arrest man in downtown stabbing spree

Calgary police say a man is in custody after a series of stabbings in downtown Calgary Monday afternoon.

Officers received multiple reports of a man with a knife they allege stabbed three people on 4 and 5 avenues SW at around 12:45 p.m.

They allege one of those stabbed was due to the suspect trying to steal a purse.

Meanwhile, EMS say they took four people to hospital, with one in critical condition taken to Foothills Hospital, while the others are in non-life threatening condition.

Officers say the suspect was arrested at around 1:10 p.m. on 4 Street and 7 Avenue SE after a “confrontation” with police.

More details about the case, including charges, will be released when they become available, according to investigators.

In the meantime, police are looking for witnesses to come forward and provide information about the alleged stabbings.
