Alberta Premier Danielle Smith affirms parental role in education at the UCP annual meeting in Calgary

United Conservative Party of Alberta Annual General Meeting

Delegates at Alberta’s United Conservative Party annual general meeting overwhelmingly passed a motion requiring parental consent if a child under the age of 16 wishes to use a different name or pronoun at school.

It mirrors legislation recently passed in Saskatchewan that has drawn harsh criticism from L-G-B-T-Q-plus advocates. Such resolutions are not binding on the government, but do reflect grassroots input on where they want public policy to go.

Premier Danielle Smith drew cheers when she promised during her speech to the meeting yesterday that she would keep parents in control of their children’s education.

About 35-hundred delegates were expected to attend the party’s first get-together since it won re-election in May.
