More than a year after a man was left in serious condition after being shot in Calgary’s southeast, police have laid charges against two men.
Around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, a driver called police to report a shooting involving two vehicles on westbound Glenmore Trail near 37 Street SW. The vehicles left the scene before police arrived and no one was hurt.
About 30 minutes later, police were called to a home in the 100 block of Seton Passage SE for reports a man had been shot while parking his vehicle.
When police got there, they found a man who’d been shot. He was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Investigators believe the suspect fired multiple rounds during the shooting in Seton and stray bullets hit four houses in the area. He then left the scene in a stolen vehicle.
Both shootings targeted the same person, according to police, and investigators think they were targeted.
On Oct. 18, 2023, while trying to arrest two suspects involved in the incident, an officer discharged their service weapon. At the time, Calgary police say one suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and one officer was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Another man was also arrested and charged on the same day.
ASIRT initiated an investigation following the officer-involved incident.
Despite the single arrest, police continued to investigate the initial shootings to figure out if anyone else was involved. Investigators say a significant number of resources were used in this case due to the level of violence.
Two men are now facing charges for the shooting on Glenmore Trail as well as their alleged involvement in planning the shooting in Seton.
Thirty-year-old Masood Mohammad has been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He is set to appear in court on Oct. 7.
Harliv Singh Cheema, 20, is also facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder and accessory after the fact to an indictable offense. He is also scheduled to be in court on Oct. 7.
“Our job is to hold everyone responsible for violence in Calgary accountable, and our efforts do not stop at the individual who pulls the trigger,” Acting Insp. Roland Stewart said in a statement. “This investigation is a direct example of the dedication and tenacity of our organized crime investigators, who spend months collecting evidence to progress an investigation despite unco-operative victims and attempts to evade police.”
