Man in 70s dead after multi-vehicle SE Calgary crash

Calgary police say a man in his seventies has died after a crash in southeast Calgary Wednesday afternoon.

Calgary police say a man in his 70s is dead after a mid-afternoon crash in southeast Calgary Wednesday.

Investigators say just before 4 p.m. there was a collision between three vehicles at the intersection of Southland Drive SE and Bonaventure Drive SE.

A GMC truck, driven by a man in his 30s, was driving east on Southland Drive SE and went into the intersection at Bonaventure Drive SE on a green light, according to police. There were three passengers in the vehicle, including a woman in her 30s, a woman in her 50s, and a child.

A Buick Verano, driven by a woman in her 40s with a teenage passenger, was stopped at a red light on Southland Drive in the right lane of Bonaventure Drive.

At the same time, a black Ford Mustang, driven by a man in his 70s with a woman in her 70s as a passenger, was driving north on Bonaventure Drive and is believed to have went into the intersection on a red light, hitting the GMC truck

As a result of being hit, the GMC truck hit a light poll and stopped on a nearby median. The Mustang then hit the Buick before stopping north of the intersection.

The driver of the Mustang was fatally injured and declared dead at the scene.

The passenger was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police say none of the other drivers or passengers were hurt in the incident.

Excessive speed isn’t considered to be a factor in this collision. There is no evidence alcohol or drugs were involved either.

Investigators are continuing to look into the cause of the collision.
