A boy has life-altering injuries after being hit by a vehicle in southwest Calgary on Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the area of 210 Avenue SW and Belmont Drive around 7:40 a.m. for reports of a crash at the intersection.

Investigators say a 12-year-old boy was crossing in an unmarked crosswalk when he was hit by a red 2020 Toyota Corolla that was travelling westbound on 201 Avenue SW.

The boy was rushed to hospital with life-altering injuries where he remains in stable condition.

The driver of the Toyota, a woman in her 30s, and a passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Photos from the scene show the car with a badly damaged front hood and windshield.

Police say speed or impairment are not considered factors in the crash. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

Residents say intersection ‘not safe’

Residents CityNews spoke with say they are not shocked to hear someone was struck in that intersection.

“Everyday when they cross the intersection I feel very scared for them,” says a mother whose children cross the intersection everyday. “I always tell them to look left and right and not use their phone when crossing.”

When asked about the crash, Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean says he is working on ways to make the community more safe.

“I have been talking with roads in lots of different areas in my ward, making sure we are putting proper safety measures in place,” says McLean. “In this case we identify the need for some sort of light, flashing crosswalk, or beeper to make it more safe.”

The intersection was closed for a short time to allow officers to investigate.
