A man is in hospital with burns after a fire at a home in northwest Calgary on Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to Varsity Crescent NW near 40 Avenue and 53 Street around 12:50 p.m. after getting reports of smoke from a house.

Fire officials say a group of teens started smelling smoke and then saw smoke coming from the front door of a home before they called 911.

Firefighters arrived and started searching the home while working to put out the fire.

Crews found a man in an upstairs room where they believe the fire started. He was rushed to hospital with burns to his face and hands.

Fire damage was limited to the room where the blaze started, but officials say the remainder of the house has smoke damage. Residents are unable to return at this time.

Investigators say the home did have working smoke alarms.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
