The city’s police homicide unit is investigating a suspicious death in downtown Calgary after a body was found Sunday.
Staff Sgt. John Guigon tells CityNews a security guard called the police just after 5 a.m. after they found a body outside at 707 5 Street SW near the 6 Street CTrain Station.
Police and EMS arrived and found an adult man unresponsive, with the latter declaring him dead at the scene.
He explains police can’t determine the cause of death at this time, and the investigation is expected to last several hours.
Officers note blood splatter was found throughout the area associated with the deceased person, closing several roads as the homicide unit investigates.
“A huge swath of downtown is cordoned off as we look for the place of occurrence. We’ve been following little blood splatter and stuff, etcetera, across the downtown,” he said.
Police are currently investigating the blood trail as it indicates the person might have travelled several blocks from the place of occurrence, he confirmed.
The roads closed and expected to re-open once the investigation concludes are as follows:
- 4 Street SW and 8 Avenue SW in all directions.
- 6 Street SW and 8 Avenue SW in all directions.
- 6 Street SW and 10 Avenue SW in all directions.
- 5 Street SW and 7 Avenue SW in all directions.
Meanwhile, Guigon says police want to know if any Calgarians have seen “anything unusual” between 4-5 a.m. in the downtown core.
