Cold snap coming for Calgary after stretch of warm weather

A cold front whipped into Calgary Thursday night and continues into the weekend with double-digit negative temperatures. Strong winds brought down some power lines. Rayn Rashid is with Calgarians who were affected.

The weather in Calgary and across much of southern Alberta is about to take a turn after a warmer-than-normal start to the new year.

660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield says a temperature drop started Thursday afternoon with wind warnings already in place for areas outside of the city.

“We are expecting that temperature drop to start as we carry our way through the evening,” he says.

The daytime temperature nearly hit 10 C early Thursday, but Stanfield says a steady decline throughout the day brought flurries and strong wind.

“Those winds will be strictly from the north, bringing in a ridge of high-pressure, so we’re not seeing a low pressure drop, it’s in fact the opposite,” he says.

Environment Canada is expecting a high of -6 C on Friday for Calgary before the cold air really takes hold over the weekend. Saturday will see a high of -15 C, with a similar high of -17 C on Sunday.

Overnight temperatures could dip as low as -25 C through the weekend.

Wind warnings are in place for areas east and south of Calgary, stretching from just outside the city limits to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge. The winds are expected to weaken by Friday morning.

The warning east of the city also includes a mention of falling snow that is expected to reduce visibility in some areas.

The cold snap is expected to be short-lived with an expected rebound to daytime highs above 0 C for most of next week.
