A Calgary woman has been charged after she allegedly stole more than $65,000 while volunteering with a non-profit organization that supports Canadian veterans.
Police began investigating in early 2024 after people at the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) headquarters in Ottawa tried to process payments through the organizations Alberta chapter and kept seeing failed attempts.
The organization called police after doing an internal audit of their finances dating back to 2022.
Investigators allege a woman who worked as a volunteer secretary at the ANAVETS Alberta chapter from November 2022 to January 2024 embezzled $66,900 to a business that was owned by her and her husband.
Calgary resident Cindy Biggs, 49, has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.
She is scheduled to appear in a Calgary courtroom on Feb. 27.
