Calgary police have laid charges in a hit-and-run last spring that left a man dead.
Just before 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024, a man in his 70s was walking north along 47 Street SE in a marked crosswalk, crossing Memorial Drive SE.
At the same time, a black BMW X5 was driving east on Memorial Drive SE approaching 47 Street SE, and hit the pedestrian.
The man was declared dead at the scene.
Before police could arrive, the driver fled the scene, continuing to drive east before abandoning the vehicle.
Investigators found the car a short time later.
After a lengthy investigation by the Traffic Unit, an arrest was made this week.
Twenty-four-year-old Muhammad Rayyan Arshad, the driver of the BMW, has been charged with one count of hit-and-run and one count of hit-and-run causing death.
He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
Police are still looking to identify the driver of a white sedan believed to have been travelling beside the BMW during the time of the incident.
Investigators believe the driver of the sedan may have important information about the investigation.
