Man charged in armed gas station robbery, and crash involving stolen vehicle

A Calgary man is facing charges after allegedly robbing a gas station with a gun last month.

A Calgary man is facing charges after allegedly robbing a gas station with a gun last month.

Calgary police say around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, a man entered Mobile Gas at 6914 4 Street NW armed with a gun.

He then demanded money and cigarettes from behind the counter.

According to police, the suspect stole an unknown amount of money and smokes from the store before leaving the area in a black Nissan Murano. An investigation later determined the car was stolen.

Last Saturday, just after 4 p.m., officers responded to a collision on 37 Avenue NW that involved the stolen Murano.

The driver tried to leave the scene, according to police, but witnesses helped to locate him so he could be arrested by officers.

A man is now facing several charges in connection to the armed robbery and the collision.

Jamie Robert Smith, 49, of Montreal, has been charged with robbery with a firearm, possession of stolen property over $5,000, refusal to comply with a demand, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a stolen identity documents, and three traffic violations.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 24.
