The mother of a man who died after being shot by a Calgary police officer last month says she knew something like this would happen.

A report released by Alberta’s police watchdog, ASIRT, Thursday, reveals the man killed in a southeast trailer park on Feb. 19 had spoke about his desires to die at the hands of law enforcement.

ASIRT has determined the officer who shot and killed the man was acting reasonably and in self-defence, meaning no charges will be filed.

The incident began on the morning of Feb. 19, when a woman placed a called to the police non-emergency line, indicating her brother was abusing her elderly mother.

Based on the information provided by the woman, police escalated the call to an in-progress domestic situation, triggering the deployment of officers to the residence in Red Carpet.

On the way to the scene, an officer called the elderly woman, who indicated her son was displaying extreme anger and had access to a large dagger.

Due to a medical condition, she indicated she was unable to leave the home.

When police arrived, officers approached the front door armed with various items, including tasers and guns.

An officer opened the door and the man, armed with a knife moved quickly towards the open door and the officers.

One officer discharged their weapon four times, while another discharged their taser.

Medical assistance was immediately provided but the man was declared dead at the scene.

His elderly mother was found seated at a table inside the home and had witnessed the entire thing.

During her interview with ASIRT, she asked officials to pass a message along to the police officers involved.

“I forgive him. He had to do his own job and there’s nothing else he could’ve done.”
