Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk & Wheel returns to Calgary

By CityNews Staff

One of Calgary’s largest family fundraising events returns to the streets this Mother’s Day.

The Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk & Wheel goes this Sunday, May 11.

For nearly five decades, the event has supported the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and the Calgary Health Foundation.

There’s something for everyone who wants to participate; a kids’ race, a five kilometre run/walk and the adidas-sponsored 10 kilometre run.

Registration is open for all events until Saturday at midnight.

Participants will receive a boatload of goodies and opportunities: a swag bag, promotional offers from Sport Chek, and a finisher medal.

Racers also have the chance to support two charities, Canadian Tire Jumpstart and the Calgary Health Foundation.

There will also be aid stations, food, drink, and a post-race party at the finish line.

The races kick off from CF Chinook Centre starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Road closures

There will be various road closures to accommodate the day’s events.

The city says the Annual Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk and Ride route will be closed to motorists from 6 a.m. until noon.

Those lane closures are:

  • Macleod Trail will be reduced to two lanes for northbound traffic between Glenmore Trail and 53 Avenue SW.
  • MacLeod Trail will be reduced to one lane for southbound traffic between Glenmore Trail and 53 Avenue SW.
  • Southbound Elbow Drive SW will be reduced to one lane in each direction between 4 Street SW and 58 Avenue SW, and northbound lanes will be closed to traffic.
  • 4 Street SW will be closed between 42 Avenue SW and 58 Avenue SW.
  • 58 Avenue SW will be closed between 5 Street SW and Macleod Trail.
  • There’s limited parking in the area, so participants are advised to use Calgary Transit.

Additionally, the city is reminding motorists that there will be a heavy police presence on site.
