4 Avenue Flyover to close through the weekend for ongoing construction

The bridge will remain closed between 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Some commuters will need to find a new way into downtown Calgary this weekend with crews set to shut down the 4 Avenue Flyover.

The City of Calgary says as part of ongoing rehabilitation to the bridge it will need to be closed throughout the weekend.

It was already closed overnight Thursday into Friday morning for similar work.

Full closures of the bridge for paving will start again at 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday (June 9) morning.

The $12.5 million rehabilitation of the bridge into downtown has entered its final phase and the city says it remains on schedule to wrap up in the fall of 2025.

Crews have completed the replacement of the right-hand barrier. The final steps include the paving and the installing new sign structures.

The city says the closures are subject to change as “paving operations are highly weather-dependent and can only proceed if conditions are favourable.”

The 4th Avenue flyover has been down to a single lane since last April.

The rehabilitation work will aim to extend the life of the bridge by approximately 35 years.
