‘Help him rest’: Family of teen killed in NE Calgary want answers

After a Calgary teenager was killed in northeast Abbeydale Friday, his family is now seeking answers to learn more about what happened and why.

The teen, 16-year-old Carter Spivak-Villeneuve, was on his way back home early Friday and was almost there, but he never made it.

“He lived in Abbeydale. He lived here. It was half a block from my house–half a block from his house,” Candace Basque, the victim’s aunt, told 660 NewsRadio.

“He was actually heading home, from my understanding.”

Officers were called to the area of Abergale Drive and Abbeydale Drive in the community of Abbeydale around 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 1 for reports of a person in medical distress.

But it was too late for life-saving efforts, as the 16-year-old was found dead.

Following the autopsy, investigators identified Spivak-Villenueve and ruled his death a homicide.

Basque helped raise him since he was a baby, saying, “He was like one of my own.” She added that her door was always open to him if he ever needed anything now that he was a high school student.

“Amazing child, very artistic. Very polite. He had a lot of friends. Very social,” she told 660 NewsRadio.

She says the way Spivak-Villeneuve was taken only adds more hurt to the heartbreaking loss.

“Somebody took his life. Somebody,” she said. “Somebody out there took his life. So many unanswered questions. So many.”

“I just hope and pray that somebody got dashcam or something.”

Homicide investigators ask anyone in the area who saw anything suspicious to report it to police, and they’d like them to share any dashcam or CCTV footage.

“Help him rest. I know somebody knows something,” Basque said tearfully.

“Because I need justice for him. I need him to rest with his grandma and grandpa–with his family that’s gone already.

“My only question is why? Why? That’s my biggest question. Why?”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with unexpected funeral costs.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
