With the debate over separation ongoing in Alberta, controversy has erupted over the use of the provincial flag in a Safeway in Medicine Hat.
Posting on social media, veteran Shawn Copland voiced his concern to the assistant manager of a Safeway in Medicine Hat, which had an Alberta flag strung up inside the store.
Copland, a member of the Facebook group “Forever Canadian,” says he’s concerned about the flag being politicized and is being co-opted for reasons other than pride in Alberta.
He also said as a veteran, the use of the Alberta flag could be seen as a rebuke to Canadian sovereignty and “suggested” that it should be taken down.
However, while many showed support for questioning the use of the flag, his post faced severe criticism elsewhere on social media, with some complaining the display of the Alberta flag isn’t political.
In a statement to 660 NewsRadio, parent company Sobey’s says no ill intent or political statement is intended from the placement of flags inside its stores; rather, it’s showcasing local products.
The flag, which was removed at one point, has since been reinstalled in the store.
Some Safeways in Calgary also have Alberta flags inside.
