Calgary man charged in Elbow Falls sex assault investigation

RCMP east of Calgary have laid a sexual assault charge against a man who allegedly assaulted a woman he met on an online dating site, with officials saying there may be more victims.

A Calgary man has been charged following a lengthy investigation into a sexual assault that occurred in the Elbow Falls area more than a year ago.

RCMP say the incident occurred on Aug. 19, 2024, during a walk between a man and a woman who had previously met online.

The suspect was known to the victim only by his online alias “Sam” and is believed to have maintained profiles on dating platforms such as Bumble and Hinge.

Cochrane RCMP launched the investigation in September 2024. After more than a year of investigative work, police identified and arrested Sohaib Wasif, 67, of Calgary on Oct. 27, 2025.

Wasif has been charged with one count of sexual assault. He has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in December.

RCMP believe there may be additional victims who had troubling encounters with the individual known as “Sam.” Officials are urging anyone with similar experiences to come forward.

Anyone with information can contact Cochrane RCMP at 403-851-8000 or their local police. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
