Fire at SE Calgary encampment sends two to hospital

An investigation is underway after an early-morning fire at an encampment in southeast Calgary sends two to hospital. Jayden Wasney reports.

Fire crews were called to a blaze at a homeless encampment in the city’s southeast on Friday morning, where two people were injured and rushed to the hospital.

The fire broke out just after 8 a.m. near 58 Avenue SE and Barlow Trail, behind a commercial building in the Foothills industrial area.

Officials say the encampment had been there for some time.

Both victims, believed to have been trying to stay warm during the deep freeze, suffered burns and are now receiving treatment in hospital.

Firefighters had to cut through a chain-link fence to reach the scene and quickly contained the blaze, which was far enough from the nearby building that it posed no risk of spreading.

The fire department tells CityNews that propane tanks, gas cans, and a generator were also found at the site.

A fire investigator remains on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
