Domestic incident in SE Calgary leaves man in 70s dead

Calgary police say the death that happened late Sunday night in the SE community of Deer Run involved a father and his son.

Calgary police are investigating a suspicious death in the southeast community of Deer Run Monday morning.

Officers were called to a home in the community shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, following reports of a disturbance.

A man in his 70s was found inside with severe stab wounds and taken to hospital where he died a short time later.

Investigators believe the incident is domestic in nature and said Monday the incident involved a father and son.

The suspect, a man in his 30s who has since been identified as the victim’s son, was tracked to downtown and arrested in the area of 9 Avenue and 1 Street SW shortly before 2 a.m.

Second-degree murder charges are now pending against the son.

“I wouldn’t say he’s well-known to police,” said Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn with the Calgary Police Service. “He has a minor history with the police, but he is certainly not well-known.”

CTrain service was temporarily suspended downtown as part of the investigation. Service has since resumed.

An autopsy on the victim is expected Wednesday morning

More details are expected once the autopsy is completed and charges are laid.
