Five youths seriously injured in crash on Calgary Deerfoot and Memorial

Around 4 am Saturday morning, Calgary emergency services responded to a single vehicle rollover on the northbound side of Deerfoot Trail, just below memorial drive.

Five youths have been seriously injured after a single-vehicle crash, including a girl who was ejected from the vehicle, on Calgary’s Deerfoot Trail and Memorial Drive early Saturday.

Calgary police say it happened at around 4 a.m. when a 2011 Toyota RAV4 with five youths inside were heading north on Deerfoot Trail, approaching Memorial Drive SE, at a “high rate of speed.”

Officers say with snowy conditions and slippery roads, the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck a barrier, which caused the car to spin, ejecting one of the passengers, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Then, the car crossed all northbound lanes, smacked into the base of a bridge on the side of the road, and kept going north before stopping beside the highway.

EMS say they responded to a motor vehicle collision, taking a young girl in life-threatening condition to hospital. The girl and another youth were taken to Foothills Medical Centre, while the remainder were taken to Alberta Children’s Hospital.

The police traffic team say speed and the weather conditions are believed to be factors.

As a result, roads in the area were closed for several hours, but reopened after 10 a.m.

Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
