Calgary police handed out more than 150 tickets over two weekends as officers increased enforcement against dangerous driving associated with car meets held across the city.
Police say many of the violations were tied to gatherings promoted on social media, where drivers engage in risky behaviour including excessive speeding, stunting and operating vehicles with illegal modifications.
In one instance, a 20-year-old driver was clocked at 126 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. In another, a 19-year-old was recorded travelling 137 km/h in the same speed limit. Both incidents were connected to car meet activity.
“I can’t imagine that anyone listening to this, or any of our fellow Calgarians, think that in any way possible this is acceptable behaviour, and we certainly don’t,” said Insp. Rob Patterson of the Calgary Police Service traffic section.
The crackdown comes amid growing concern about road safety in the city.
Police say Calgary has already recorded 10 fatal crashes so far this year, putting it ahead of last year’s pace. Those deaths include five pedestrians.
In recent weeks alone, three motorcyclists have also suffered serious injuries in collisions.
Officers say enforcement efforts will continue, with targeted patrols planned for known gathering spots and roadways frequently used for speeding.
