State of Calgary nightlife, mayor & residents weigh in

The mayor of Calgary and other residents are weighing in on the state of the city’s nightlife following the announcement that Cowboys Dance Hall is permanently closing.
In late July, Cowboys Dance Hall unveiled that it’s shutting its doors, a decision that came just months after another iconic late night destination announced relocation plans.
Ranchman’s Cookhouse & Dancehall says it will move to a new location.
But Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the city will take more action to help Calgary’s nightlife improve, a decision that will be reflected in the next budget.
“Support for Tourism Calgary, bids for major events and festivals, and of course keeping the tax burden reasonable for local businesses especially operators like restaurants and nightclubs, I think that’s a big part of it too,” Farkas says.
Calgarians give nightlife a thumbs up
CityNews asked Calgarians if they’re concerned about the future of nightlife in the city, but most gave the scene a favorable reaction.
“Pretty awesome, honestly there’s always fun stuff to do in the city,” one resident told us, while another person was equally enthusiastic.
“Calgary offers a lot of cool new places for people to go and enjoy drinks and have craft cocktails.”
Many people say 17th Ave. is the place to be.
“I feel like there’s a lot more cramped into this street than downtown. You kinda have to walk around a lot more and get Ubers and stuff.”
Another Calgarian says, “.. all the bars are down here and the young people actually like it here.”
One resident thinks the scene is growing.
“Its getting better, I remember moving here 6 years ago, and compared to where i came from Toronto, it wasn’t much, but now, its much better.”
Another former Torontonian prefers the vibe, saying, ” (there are) not as many crazies, not as much tension or fighting like in the bar scene I guess. Everyone’s there to have a good time.”
