Calgary looks to streamline housing strategy

The city of Calgary is looking to streamline its housing strategy as data shows the need for housing is growing.
A steep reduction in actionable items is in the works to address the matter, down to 10 such actions from 98.
“(The changes focus) on where we have been falling short and where we have been falling short is on delivering more non-market housing for Calgarians,” says the city’s chief housing officer, Reid Hendry.
City administration says they discovered over 84,000 households in 2021 who couldn’t afford a home, however that number is now projected to be 110,000.
The slashing of action items in Calgary’s housing strategy was a request from council back in May.
Councillor Nathaniel Schmidt says, “I think we need to keep making progress on this front, because the more people who have stable housing the more they can contribute to our community overall.”
As for the city’s revamped plan, Hendry says, “there’s certainly an emphasis on non-market housing in the refresh strategy, but we have very important actions that remain that talk about the overall market of housing.”
The refreshed strategy was slated to go a vote by city council following an anticipated endorsement at Tuesday’s Community Development Committee.
