Police say a suspected impaired driver caught their attention after an incident in the Walmart parking lot in Brooks, and was just one of a number of concerning cases the Mounties dealt with in a short period.
RCMP in the city east of Calgary say witnesses called in the case the evening of Sept. 4.
“Witnesses reported observing the driver (allegedly) consume two beers in approximately 10 minutes before operating a vehicle at dangerous speeds through the parking lot,” an RCMP social media post states.
Police allege the driver failed a breath screening test before being taken to jail.
The motorist was released once sober, and was given an immediate 90-day driver’s licence suspension, a 30-day vehicle seizure and a $1200 administrative penalty.
Two assaults dealt with at Patricia Rodeo grounds
Brooks RCMP say they also dealt with a pair of assaults at the Patricia Rodeo.
They say a female victim was struck from behind on Sept. 5, with police responding at about 1:24 a.m.
After the initial blow, the victim was “repeatedly assaulted, causing her to lose consciousness. During the incident, another individual attempted to intervene and was struck in the head with a bottle.”
One person has been charged in relation to the initial attack, but no arrests have been made in the second beating.
The female victim in the first attack was taken to hospital and was reportedly in stable condition.
Meanwhile, RCMP say they were also called to the Patricia rodeo grounds the evening of Sept. 4 to another assault.
Officers came across the injured victim on the ground and being cared for by bystanders.
Two male suspects were arrested and are scheduled to appear in court Nov. 18.
Driver with learners license charged after running into several vehicles
Brooks RCMP say a driver with a learner’s license was at the wheel of vehicle that slammed into several parked vehicles Sept 7.
“…the vehicle initially left the roadway and struck two parked vehicles in a driveway. The driver then reportedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to cross the roadway and collide with additional parked vehicles before coming to rest against a fence.”
The driver was given four tickets for distracted driving, failing to ascertain sufficient space for movement, operating a motor vehicle as a learner without proper supervision, and careless driving.
“Brooks RCMP remind Class 7 drivers that they must follow all learner-driver restrictions and be accompanied by a properly licensed supervising driver when operating a motor vehicle.”
