Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories have signed an agreement to work together on nuclear power and regional electricity transmission.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) sets out a framework for sharing information and collaborating on nuclear technologies, including large reactors, small modular reactors and microreactors.
“Alberta’s economy is growing, and we need more reliable power to keep that growth going,” said Premier Danielle Smith in a statement. “Nuclear energy has enormous potential to provide dependable power for our homes and businesses and support the continued growth of our energy sector.”
The Alberta government says electricity demand is rising across Western Canada and the North, and that cooperation will help support reliable, affordable and sustainable power systems. The shared priorities include improving grid security and long‑term affordability, assessing nuclear power as a potential path to carbon‑neutral electricity, and exploring upgrades to transmission infrastructure.
Under the agreement, the provinces and territory will coordinate on issues such as choosing nuclear technologies, financing, environmental reviews, regulatory approvals, uranium supply and nuclear waste management.
A nuclear energy roadmap is expected to be released by Alberta early next year.
