Calgary woman loses $25K in fake bank fraud call

A Calgary woman lost more than $25,000 in a fake bank fraud call, and four men are facing charges for allegedly running a scam where they pretended to be bank employees and couriers.

Calgary police say a woman got a call on Aug. 5 from a man claiming to be from her bank’s fraud department.

Police say the woman was told there were suspicious transactions on her credit card and that the card had been frozen to stop further fraud. The man on the phone instructed her to cut up her card, put it in an envelope and leave it for a courier driving a silver Honda CRV.

The suspect later called again and asked her to confirm her old PIN. He then asked her to verify a new one for a replacement card he claimed would arrive in the mail.

The next day, her credit card showed several unauthorized transactions totalling $25,824. She contacted her bank and learned her card had never been frozen, prompting her to call police.

Calgary police say the quick reporting helped officers identify and arrest several people. Police are reminding residents that banks will never ask for PINs, bank cards, or valuables to be picked up by a courier.

On Aug. 29, officers searched a home along 15 Avenue SW in the Beltline and seized a replica pellet handgun, a conducted energy weapon, a retractable baton, bear spray canisters, a backpack containing .22‑calibre ammunition, a device for vehicle computer access, ID and bank cards.

Police also say two stolen motorcycles were recovered across the street and are believed to be connected to that residence.

Four Calgary men were arrested on charges ranging from fraud over $5,000 to uttering forged documents, stolen bank cards and multiple breaches of release orders.

Anyone who has lost money or had their personal information compromised can report it to police at 403‑266‑1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
