For the first time in 15 years, more people moved away from Alberta then moved into the province.
According to the Statistics Canada report, between July and September 20,790 people moved to the province while 23,325 packed their bags and left.
But despite the net loss of 2,535 people, Alberta’s population grew by 0.44% in the third quarter.
U of C economist Frank Atkins tells 660News, people move where the work is and right now Alberta is not the leader in jobs. He says better royalty regimes in B.C. and Saskatchewan mean more companies are operating in those provinces. He says there is also more work in B.C. because of the Winter Olympics and all the construction surrounding the games.
British Columbia had the highest rate of growth in the third quarter and the population of Saskatchewan has reached an all-time high of 1,340,974.
Alberta’s population sits at 3,703,979.
