It was a long, anxious night for Haitians living in Calgary.
Many spent the night desperately trying to get in contact with family and friends stuck in the devastation.
Unfortunately, very few have been able to speak with their loved ones thanks to downed phone lines and power outages throughout much of the Caribbean country.
Members of the Haitian community in Calgary gathered last night at their association office to get the latest information and offer each other support.
“All we can do right now, from here, is pray and hope for the best,” Jean Fevry, who has friends and family in the country, tells the Calgary Herald.
The President of the Haiti Association of Calgary has been trying to get a hold of his brother.
“We’re seeing that houses and buildings came down and we don’t know if he was in the area at the time or not because we can’t even get through on the phones. I just need to get an answer,” Urbain Louissaint tells the Herald.
There are already talks of a fundraiser for the relief efforts in Haiti.
100,000 Canadians are of Haitian origin and 2,000 of them call Calgary home.
