Calgary construction slows in ’09

The value of building permits issued in Calgary dropped last year, but surged in the final month.

The City of Calgary reports residential building doubled in December, and commercial and industrial construction ramped up by more than 85 per cent.

David Watson, General Manager of Planning, Development and Assessment says December’s numbers are a sign of a more balanced market for this year.

Overall building permit values hit $3.66 billion in Calgary last year, compared to $4.04 billion the year before.  That’s still well ahead of the ten year average ($3.32billion).
