The Olympic Torch has arrived at Olympic Plaza to thunderous applause, cheering and chanting.
It marks the first time the cauldron has been lit since the 1988 winter games in Calgary.
Many of the people at Olympic Plaza were decked out in Red and White, some wearing jackets and pins from the Calgary Winter Olympics.
Robin Perry – Ainsworth, who lit the cauldron 22 years ago, was once again given the honour, which occured shortly after 7 p.m.
This followed an inspiring run of the torch up Macleod Trail to Olympic Plaza.
Hundreds lined the major road to welcome the torch to Calgary Monday afternoon. The crowd erupted when the torch passed by the first on-lookers.
The sight of the torch brought tears to the eyes of one woman, she says she is not usually emotional, but this is a very special event.
Some youngsters have called it ‘cool’ to see the flame and the relay, while others are proud of family members who are torchbearers.
The torch will spend all day Tuesday in Calgary, before departing on Wednesday after a party at Canada Olympic Park.
