Closing arguments wrap up in Martel murder trial

The closing arguments have been presented in the second degree murder trial of Travis Martel.

He is accused of stabbing his girlfriend August 3, 2008 in their north east condo.

The defence lawyer says his client accidentally stabbed Sarah Rae after the two got into a physical fight.

The crown says the victim did not want to be in a relationship with the accused and that spurred the fight.  Gord Wong says when Martel videotaped Rae’s last dying breaths, he zoomed in on the stab wound and said “look at that wound there, straight to the sternum.  Right on.”  Wong says it is clear Martel was admiring his work.

Deafens lawyer Balfour Der says the crown is “cherry picking” and choosing only parts of the tape that suits his case and he has not proven that Martel intentionally stabbed Rae and intended for her to die.
