What you pay for gas and power in Lethbridge can differ from what you pay in Calgary and Red Deer, even though usage might be exactly the same. And that’s wrong, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
They want a province wide policy for municipal gas and power fees. Right now, the CFIB says the fees amount to nothing more than a hidden tax.
They vary because certain municipalities add a system access fee to your bill.
Richard Truscott, the Alberta Director of the CFIB, calls it a mish-mash of charges.
For instance, here in Calgary there’s a fee linked to the actual commodity price.
Truscott says that’s not right, noting the city collected as much as $130-million in fees last year.
