Some relief is on the way for frustrated Calgary drivers.
Until administration can come up with an overall review of the snow removal program, the city is out with a plan on how it’ll deal with snowy and icy roads in the interim.
The plan includes a ten-million dollar cash injection to help road crews deal with the rest of the season.
That money will mean crews will be able to get to another 7,000 kilometres of roads, many of them residential.
The city will clear side streets that have more than 12cm of snow or ruts on them; shave down the ruts twice per year and perform spot sanding on high and low priority routes at the same time.
Director of Roads, Ryan Jestin, says the extra cash will allow more attention to be paid to priorities they otherwise wouldn’t be able to get to.
“This policy will also allow for the removal of windrows, driveway windrows and drifts on a complaint basis at the discretion of the roads maintenance manager.”
The money will be filtered out of the Fiscal Stability Reserve. The interim policy is only being used until the end of this winter. Officials say the budget audit currently being done will take care of next winter.
