GM Darryl Sutter reams into Flames veterans

Calgary Flames GM Darryl Sutter is not happy with how his team is playing and he’s let some of his veterans know it.

Jarome Iginla, Robyn Regehr and Daymond Langkow were called into the GM’s office for a meeting after Tuesday’s skate.

Sutter laid into his core group over the lack of leadership on the team.

“Other than Kipper, our team has probably not played up to standards. It’s not necessarily a message, but I expect a lot. I expect our team to be a hard-working team…and I think there are times that hasn’t happened,” Sutter tells The Fan 960.

Just off the recent multi-player trade with Toronto, Calgary was shut-out by the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. Tonight there will be two more new players in the line-up against the Carolina Hurricanes, after the four man trade with the New York Rangers.

Calgary has lost 10 of their last 11 games.

The players say they got Sutter’s message loud and clear.

“Your top guys, your leaders, you know your guys who play the most are relied upon the most. Those guys have the most responsibility. It’s not just within the team but also to set a good example with work ethic and to lead the way,” Robyn Regehr tells TSN.

The whole city has been talking about the Flames, thanks to their recent losing streak and all of the trades.

There are so many fans commenting on message boards, the teams website and on our brother station, The Fan 960 that some are saying they haven’t seen this kind of buzz since the 2004 Stanley Cup run.

While our boys in red are trying to regroup, it seems the former Flames are having no problem fitting in with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In their debut last night, Dion Phaneuf had some big hits and got into a fight within the first seven minutes of the first period. Fredrik Sjostrom got an assist on the first goal of the game as the leafs beat the devils 3-0.

The game tonight against the Hurricanes begins at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on The Fan 960.
