Lukewarm reaction to throne speech

A number of Alberta interest groups are weighing in on the province’s upcoming agenda outlined Thursday in the throne speech.

The Stelmach government is signalling the economy will dominate the spring session of the legislature.

Scott Hennig with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation tells 660News, the speech was pretty much the same old, same old.

He says the government is promising to drain its sustainability fund, borrow money and spend like crazy. Hennig says that’s what they’ve been doing for the past few years and he would like to see government show some restraint.

Greg Stringham with the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers is more positive. He says it’s encouraging to hear a more cooperative tone from the government in regards to the oil sands and research into future green technologies.

As well, Stringham welcomed the parts in the speech that looked forward to the results from the competitive review on royalty fees.

The province’s commitment to provide funding for 100 officers in Alberta is being applauded by the Calgary Police Association.

Association president John Dooks tells 660News more officers will help keep streets safe around the province.
