At least five people have been killed in a massive explosion in Middletown, Connecticut.
A news release from the office of Middletown Mayor Sebastian Giuliano says at least 12 people are known injured.
Some workers in the plant at the time were reportedly thrown up to 40 feet. Some homes near the plant had their windows blown out and residents say the resulting shockwave felt like an earthquake.
“It really shook the house and everybody was scared,” said local resident Lynn Townshend. “The kids started to cry.”
Emergency crews say there were around 50 people working in the plant at the time. Rescue helicopters are flying in crews from all over Connecticut to help pull survivors from the rubble.
Early reports indicate the blast may have been caused by a gas leak.
