Domestic violence help

The first degree murder case against Shengjun An has been put over until March 9th.

Arrangements are also being made for a Mandarin interpreter for the 43-year-old man accused of killing his wife over the weekend in Edgemont.

The death of 41-year-old Yanrong Cheng marked the 9th murder out of the last eleven in Calgary with domestic ties.

That prompted Calgary’s police chief to urge all Calgarians to get involved in the battle against domestic violence.

Social service groups are also echoing that message and are offering some advice on what can be done to make things better.

Homefront Executive Director Kevin McNichol tells 660News abuse victims need to be careful but also need to realize things usually get worse not better..

He says there is protection available that works, but only for those who come forward.

McNichol says someone who’s being abused doesn’t necessarily have to make their first stop at a police station.  There are shelters and crisis lines that are operating around the clock ready to help.
