An investigation has resulted in the closure of several unlicensed tattoo and body-piercing parlours in the city.
Because of poor record-keeping and haphazard sanitation procedures people who have visited the home-based shops are being advised to get a blood test.
Officials say this was a result of an investigation that began late last year and included the monitoring of social service networks.
Alberta Health Services Medical Health Officer, Dr. Judy MacDonald, says the parlours potentially could have spread diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C, although no one has yet tested positive.
The investigation is ongoing.
Dustin Blatz Tattooing, Grave Marking Tattoo, Latino Tattoo Removal, Norm’s Tattoo, Piercer Dan, Tattoo Girl and Outlaw Tattoo were all closed at one point.
Outlaw Tattoo has since since re-opened after addressing concerns raised by Alberta Health Services.
